George Sainton Kaye Butterworth, one of England’s most brilliant composers, was born in London on 12 July 1885 and died tragically during World War I at the first Battle of the Somme on 5 August 1916 as the result of a sniper’s bullet. Butterworth enlisted in the Army as a Private serving in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry at the beginning of the War, and eventually became a commissioned Lieutenant in the 13th Durham Light Infantry. He was twice awarded the Military Cross for his bravery during WWI.

Butterworth is best known for the orchestral idyll, The Banks of Green Willow and his song settings of A. E. Housman's poems from A Shropshire Lad. During his youth he attended Trinity College in Oxford and the Royal College of Music. It was during this time that he became good friends with Cecil Sharp, Hugh Allen, and Vaughan Williams. Both Butterworth and Vaughan Williams made trips into the English countryside to collect folk songs, and through this mutual interest they became close friends. A member of the Folk Song Society and a co-founder of the English Folk Dance Society, Butterworth collected over 450 songs and dances. He was also an expert folk dancer, being particularly adept in the art of Morris Dancing.

This exquisite composition by George Butterworth is based upon two poignant folk songs, “The Banks of Green Willow” and “Green Bushes”. This transcription of the work is loyal to the score, and thus develops the almost mystical atmosphere created by the original work.
