These pieces were all written during my time as brass and classroom teacher in Karratha. Karratha is a small town in the north west of Western Australia. Part of a region called the Pilbara. I arrived in Karratha in July 1997 straight from Lancashire to take up the position with the WA Education Department. Music and brass wasn’t really happening. As I built up a program over the next seven years, I found myself writing some solos for my students to play. The titles all have their own inspiration:
1 – Pilbara Time. Being in a relaxed area of the country, whenever you asked ‘What time does it start?’ or ‘What time shall I get there?’ The response, instead of being specific, would be…. ‘Ah, Pilbara time mate….’
2 – Crazy Shady. Written for a sassy student called Sinead… or better known as ‘Shady’ to her friends.
3 – After Closing. Written for the trombone to describe the potentially tricky walk home (those pesky gully monsters) after the pub closed.
4 – On the Burrup. The Burrup Peninsula is National Park located around 20 miles north of Karratha. It is an amazing part of the world and only accessible with a 4WD vehicle.
