Stepping Stones was written at the request of Brett Baker for a bass trombone student who was struggling to find suitable repertoire at around Grade 8 level. The duration had to be around 5 minutes with a variety of styles.
When considering a form for this I had the notion of stepping stones, each stone being a discrete musical entity, surrounded by the water flowing between them which acts to give the piece formal cohesion. I wanted to write in the tessitura which best displays the beauty of tone of the bass trombone and I chose to stay away from too many pedal notes.
