Divertimento for Clarinet and Piano

The Divertimento was composed in early 2019 for Rowan Jones and was my second consecutive work for wind and piano, having been preceded by an Oboe Sonatina. It is my fourth piece for Clarinet, following a Sonata for Joy Farrell, “In modo semplice” conceived for my younger daughter’s 11th birthday and Invocation and Seven Variants, written for the South Africa Clarinettist, Robin Cohen.
Four of the constituent numbers are simply monothematic character sketches or fragments; the Jewish-sounding Paean (subtitled “Am Yisrael chai”) is broader in scope. All the movements are in a somewhat popular style.
