A Walk Around a Fairground was inspired by a visit to Winter Wonderland on Hyde Park as a child. In the dark, with flashing lights and loud noises creating a cacophony of neon, the different themes of the rides and experiences there melded into one over-arching musical experience. The piece should be played with this sense dizziness and child-like enthusiasm in mind.
Interpretation of the styles and evocations of different sub-sections is firmly at the discretion of the performer; however, a ride on a rollercoaster, walking past a house of horror with ghostly characters jumping out of the walls, taking a ride on spinning tea cups, and finishing up with a ride on a drop tower were certainly experiences which influenced different sections.
