Originally composed for the Brass Section of King’s School in Bruton, Somerset this piece owes its creation to two very disparate celebrities. Jazz Flugelhorn legend Chuck Mangione recorded an amazing album called “Tarantella” which begins with an awesome arrangement of some traditional tarantella dances. British comedian and musician Bill Bailey for many years has done a routine about playing major-keyed melodies in minor keys.

Spiders on the Beach begins with a nautical feel (using Row Your Boat) and breaks into several tarantellas (a dance form based on the mating dance of the tarantula spider). The second section of this piece continues in the minor mode using material from the classic music hall piece “I do like to be beside the seaside”.
