Written in c1728, this setting of the Alma Redemptoris Mater, [Lat.: 'Sweet Mother of the Redeemer'], by Johann Joseph Fux (1660-1741) is one of many settings of this famous Marian antiphon by composers such as Guillame Dufay (c1738-1474), Josquin des Prez (c1440-1521), Giovanni Palestrina (c1525-1597), Thomás Victoria (1548-1611), and the leading Catholic Baroque and Classical composers in Vienna, including Marc'Antonio Ziani (c1653-1715) and Georg von Reutter the Younger (1708-1772), all intended for liturgical use. Many of the settings by these composers include elaborate obbligati for the alto trombone or for a pair of trombones. The four Marian antiphons are used to close the recitation of the last hour of each day’s office. Historically, the Marian antiphon would close the hour known as "Compline" or "Night Prayer". There are four such Marian antiphons for different seasons of the liturgical year. The Alma Redemptoris Mater is used from the first Sunday of Advent to the Purification with references to Gabriel’s annunciation to Mary. The other antiphons are Regina Caeli, used during the fifty days following Easter; Ave Regina Caelorum, used during Lent; and Salve Regina, used during the remainder of the year called simply "ordinary" time. This setting has an extended instrumental introduction, and the vocal part, for the actual prayer, is divided into four distinct sections.
