This starts as a conventional rock rhythm with a musical hook at bars 4, 12, 16 and
20. There is then a transition to bop style, what I refer to as a bop quaver with
accents and inflections. The rhythmic hook also appears sporadically in the reprise of
rock style — with a penultimate bop flurry at bar 72, and the last word on the subject
occurring in bars 75/76.
When transposed, as this is, the score puts clarinets into the friendly key of C major
with carefully judged dynamics to ensure a good balance — e.g. if you cannot hear
the soloist you must be too loud! Also, in this style of playing it is important to
observe the dots and dashes if a convincing interpretation is to be achieved.
Most of my compositions have an element of improvisation — but there is always a
written solo to perform in a jazz style and, perhaps, to embellish later on when the
piece is better understood.
