MELTDOWN was my entry in a composers competition announced by Brandt Attema's famous 'Trombone Collective' in 2010. They offered the full gamut of Trombones from Alto to Contra and I was excited by the challenge.

MELTDOWN, although not the ultimate winner, challenged me to write for a fuller canvas both texturally and in terms of range than I had previously attempted within the Trombone Ensemble genre.

I thought my title appropriate as it described the growing chaos of the introduction leading to an agitated first theme which (as it gathers momentum) results in a MELTDOWN moment of great climax. There after a slow 'melting' theme is descriptive of the seismic aftermath of such an event prior to the coda and the reappearance of the opening 'chaos' material.

This piece will challenge experienced players who will need a broad range of articulation and a 'large' but controlled sound at the extremes of range and dynamic.
