Amalgamation is a four-movement piece for solo tenor trombone and a choir of mixed winds. The separate movements are performed without pause except for a brief break between the third and fourth movements. Each section is a distinct musical portrait of an aspect of life in New York City.

The first movement, Prologue, is a soliloquy for the trombone soloist that states· several of the themes clearly before the ''background noise" of the ensemble marks the beginning of the second movement, Lost in the Crowd. As is suggested by the title, this section contains several themes being played all at once to create the cacophony that can swallow the individual as he/she attempts to be heard amongst countless other voices. Song for a Southern Sunrise begins as the noise of the crowd calms down and the relative peacefulness of a city sanctuary becomes the setting. The trombone soloist sings a simple song against a flowing accompaniment. This tranquility is short lived, however, as the fourth movement, Daily Dance, begins with a rhythmic brass fanfare. The irony of this "dance" is that it's turbulent.oddmeter would make it quite difficult for anyone to actually dance to it, yet in "the City" we all attempt this dance everyday.

Wil Swindler graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Music Degree in 2001. While at UNT, he studied jazz composition with Paris Rutherford and Neil Slater, saxophone with Dr. Eric· Nestler and Jim Riggs, and played lead al,tD in the 1:00 Lab Band. In 2000, Wil saw one of his original jazz compositions recorded for the band's yearly CD release. As a member of the band in 2001, they recorded four more. His other activities at UNT included composing and arranging for the Jazz Bones as well as many Dallas-based bands.
In the summer of 2000, Wil was accepted at the Henry Mancini Institute where he studied with Jack Smalley, John Clayton, Manny Albam, and Mike Abene among others. The performance there of his symphonic jazz piece ''Vantages," received praise when reviewed in the Los Angeles Times. The following summer Wil returned to LA as a commissioned composer to write a piece to be conducted by John Clayton at the Hollywood Bowl.

Wil currently lives in New York City where he is a freelance composer/arranger and performer. He is also a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop with Jim McNeely and Mike Abene.
