Commissioned by Don Lucas (Texas Tech University) PASSAGES II (1997) for Trombone and Percussion (5 Timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, marimba and chimes) continues the idea of the five short statements which was begun in PASSAGES for Trombone and Piano.
The opening passage, Marcato, is a fanfare for trombone and timpani. The second, Misterioso, features the trombone with bowed vibraphone effects. The third passage, Giocoso, is a one-in-the-bar rhythmic interplay between the trombone and xylophone. Passage IV, Recitativo, is a poignant statement for trombone and rolled marimba effects. Again, the final passage features the Toccata for trombone and timpani alternating with chimes.
