Giovanni Battista Bassani was born in Padua, Italy, in around 1657. He studied violin and composition in Venice, Castrovillari being amongst his teachers. From 1677 he was an organist in Ferrara and surrounding areas: Maestro di cappella at the Confraternitą del finale in Modena from 1677; at the court of Duke Alessandro II from 1680; at the Accademia della morte in Ferrara from 1684; and at the cathedral in Ferrara from 1686. In 1712 he went to Bergamo, where he taught music and directed at S. Maria Maggiore until his death in 1716. He composed at least nine operas, some fifteen oratorios, madrigals, masses and religious works, cantatas and many instrumental works. This Sonata, originally in the key of A minor, was scored for two treble instruments, bass and continue. It is presented here as a trio for two tenor trombones and one bass or Bb/F trombone.
