Fraser: Against the Odds

AGAINST THE ODDS was commissioned for the BRITISH TROMBONE SOCIETY by Peter Oram, then Principal Trombone of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, for performance at the second meeting of the Scottish section on 1st June 1986 at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.
The performers at this first performance were: Solo Trombones - Lance Green, Brian Free and Bob Hughes plus a choir of about 40 players from all parts of the trombone community.
It is scored for three Solo Trombones and three part Trombone choir. However, it could be performed satisfactorily as a sextet with some attention to dynamics, which have the large choir in mind.
The work is in one movement of three sections, the third being a mirror of the first. The title comes from the David and Goliath concept of the solo trombone against the massed trombones of the choir.
