Belshaw: At The Lake

TB694.jpg

The music of At the Lake offers impressions of an afternoon?s diversion out of doors. In each of the five miniatures, motives and figures are presented as canons in stretto, usually one-half to one beat apart. The effect of this slight shifting out of phase of musical figures creates undulations which imitate the movement of various elements of nature: groups of racing children or birds, waves of water lapping on a lake shore, the rushing of waters in a brook, the billowing of boat sails, and the movement of clouds.

At the Lake was premiered by Don Lucas, Professor of Trombone at Boston University, and Senior Chief Musician Jeffrey B. Diehl, Musician Second Class Joel L. Borelli-Boudreau, Musician Second Class Jonathan W. Reycraft, and Musician Second Class Twig D. Sargent, members of the Trombone Quartet of the U. S. Naval Academy Band, at the 2001 Convention of the Texas Bandmaster?s Association, on Monday, July 23 in the Lila Cockrell Theater of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.
