Saskia Apon (1957) was born in Rotterdam. She studied the harp with Margot Flipse-Broeders at the Rotterdam Conservatory. As a self-taughtcomposer-arranger she wrote many original works and arrangements for different brass combinations. Saskia Apon is the Rotterdam Philharmonic Brass' arranger in residence.
Describing working on an arrangement of Prokofiev she says,
"I primarily chose to preserve the visionary nature of music. I do not want to exactly copy out music for brass, rather I tried to preserve the atmosphere and the story behind the music. Furthermore, I have aimed at as many colours as can possibly be created by the ensemble. By using melody-percussion, euphonium, Fluegelhorn, Wagner tuba, and piccolo trumpet added to the standard line-up, I have tried to make the arrangements vivid and colourful. I also wanted to achieve this with various mutes and by using many different instrumental combinations, muted or not. In the March and Scherzo arrangements I have emphasized the light-heartedness of the music. In the Scherzo the brilliance of the band is exploited to the max. In the Lieutenant Kije Suite I have tried to retain the illustrative nature, the serenity in Kije's Birth followed by the festive Wedding, the beautiful Romance tune (bass trombone solo), and also the typical Troika Song."
